Description

In this seminar some basic algorithms in bioinformatics are addressed. Topics are: Basic Concepts in Molecular Biology, Pairwise Sequence Alignment, Multiple Sequence Alignment, BLAST, Phylogenetic Tree Reconstruction Methods (twin-session), Computer Based Gene Predictions, Genome Rearrangements, Physical Mapping, Fragment Assembly, Microarrays (DNA Chips).
The studends are supposed to work out and perform a approx. 35 min. presentation to a given topic based on the given literature.
In case of problems during the preparation the students should contact their tutor for help. Two weeks before the presentation the student has to hand out a pre-version of the required 10 page report (a summary of the topic in style of a scientific publication) and a pre-version of the slides; one week before the talk the final version is required.
The report should describe and discuss the topic logically, didactically, and structured.

Literature

will be given in the proseminar

General goals of a proseminar: click here (overview in German)

Language

German and English are equally admitted languages for report, slides, and the presentations.

Layout

The layout of the report should be geard to the template documents that can be found here. Additionally the first page and the first slide should contain the title of the proseminar and the presentation, the student's name and email address and the tutor's name, and the date.

Citing and quotation

If formulations or whole sentences are taken verbally from the references it has to be marked as a citation; this is also the case if the reference is a www document, there the exact url and the author of the text has to be cited.

Assessment

The quality of the presentaton and the report will be assessed in respect of content and rhetoric, and a total grade will be given by the tutors.
